How To Make Homemade Marinara Sauce – so cheap to make and so much better than store bought marinara sauce!

Marinara sauce in a white ramekin.

Have you ever done something the same way your entire life and then changed it, and went WOW what a difference? That happened to me yesterday when I listened to a song I’ve been obsessed with on my headphones for the first time. I’m totally not a headphones person, but the difference is SO amazing! You hear all sorts of magical things you can’t hear usually.

Do I sound like a crazy lady?

Anyway, the same thing happened when I made homemade marinara sauce for the first time. You know how you’re so used to store bought marinara sauce and you’re thinking “wow this is great” and then you make it at home from scratch.

Hashtag mind-blown.

The sauce starts with 9 simple ingredients that you probably already have in your house, most of them being seasonings. Then you boil them together and voila! Homemade marinara sauce. The flavour in this sauce is so powerful in terms of bringing out the tomatoes, and the seasonings blend perfectly together. I prefer it even more after everything has cooled down together and married together. This sauce is great for your pizzas, pastas, sandwiches...the list goes on. I’m currently dreaming of some mozzarella sticks to dip into this…YUM.

The best part? It comes together in less than 20 minutes, and that includes prep time if you’re moving slowly and just relaxing aka if you’re Mr. Bakes, hehe. I should note; if you try this with coconut oil it will separate in the fridge when storing, so definitely use olive oil. It will also help to bring out the flavours of the ingredients a lot more.

P.S. How was your 4th of July? I’m not American but I celebrated in my own way by taking a swim (doctor says I can swim with the broken foot yay!) and taking a very long nap. Score!

Course Jams, Sauces, Dips & Spreads
Cuisine Italian
  • 6 oz. of tomato paste
  • 6 oz. of water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons of oregano
  • 1 teaspoon fresh basil chopped
  • 1 tbsp of fresh parsley chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pepper

  • Heat a medium pot over medium-high heat. Add the tomato paste, water and olive oil to heat. Using a spatula or spoon, stir ingredients together frequently until incorporated and begins to boil a little for about 1 minute.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste and incorporate. Then add the rest of the ingredients, leaving a little parsley behind. Stir ingredients and lower heat to low. Cover the pot and leave to simmer for about 5 minutes to 8 minutes, checking to make sure the basil and parsley don’t burn. If it’s too thick for you, you can add more water by the tablespoon.
  • Garnish with remaining parsley.
